The Carian Trail: Trekking in the Footsteps of the Carians

The breathtaking 820-kilometer Carian trail winds through the enchanting landscapes of Bozburun, Datça Peninsula, Gulf of Gökova, and Carian Hinterland. The Carian Trail beckons you to embark on an extraordinary adventure, where the echoes of the Carian civilization come alive, and the legacy of their culture continues to inspire and captivate.

Among the jewels of Caria, Kaunos stands as a testament to the ancient civilization's grandeur. Kaunos, was once a commercially important port city of Carians, and lost its port feature when the sea was filled with alluviums over time. A short boat ride along the Dalyan River, the ancient Chalbis, will take you to the lovely site of Kaunos. You must also visit the beach where the river meets the Mediterranean. This beach is one of the well-known spots where Caretta Caretta, the logger-headed giant sea turtles, lay their eggs during the summer.

Next, you’ll ascend the hill where Phoenix, a proud Carian city, stands. Stroll through ancient terraces and farmsteads, explore olive oil workshops, and visit the tranquil Serçe Limanı. Established in the 3rd century BCE by Antiochos I for his queen Stratonike, this city lies 50 km east of Muğla near the quaint Eskihisar village. The agora, bouleuterion, and ancient tombs stand as proud testaments to the city’s illustrious past, while the traditional houses of Eskihisar lend a picturesque touch to your exploration.

Further along, Halicarnassus—modern-day Bodrum—invites you to uncover the marvels of its ancient glory. Halicarnassus was home to the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, celebrated as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Walking among its ruins, you can almost feel the grandeur that once stood here.
